Talk about a roller coaster of opinion. Coming back from the fabric store, I loved my fabric. As I was cutting strips, I was sure this was going to be the ugliest color combination ever conceived. After they were pieced together, I felt better about them. When they were finally attached to the center square, I liked them again.
There was considerable discussion at home about one of my fabric choices, the blue lanterns (see here, at the bottom of the post, little square at the top right). In the end, the pattern stood out too much, so I sewed a seam down the middle of my wider pieces to break up the pattern. I think this worked well.
Here's a representative block. The scanner wasn't quite wide enough, so some on the right got cut off. And the scanner made the darks much darker, so they all look black. In reality, they have some patterning.
This was pretty easy. It was fun making all the stripey pieces, mixing up the components to get semi-random arrangements. I can't wait to piece everything together and see how it looks. The quickie look on the dining table last night was promising!
The color combinations are really striking. I see what you mean - the lantern fabric might have too large of a pattern to look like a single hue from a distance. I like the lanterns, though, and I'm glad you figured out a way to keep them in there. Looking forward to seeing it all come together.

I'm doing the Marquee too and I found it funny that you said you loved the fabric in the store and that when you started sewing the strips together you thought it was going to be a horrible combo, because this is what has happened to me. In the store, I thought all the fabric was great, started cutting everything up and I started getting nervous that it was not going to work. Actually, I'm still nervous that it is not going to work since I'm still sewing the strips together. Actually, what is making me nervous is whether my strips are going to look good with the fabric I've chosen for the square.
Your Marquee is lovely, really pretty. I can't wait to be able to put some squares together. I'm hoping that by Monday I'll be ready to go. Seeing the progress you've made has given me a little boost!
